SUSTAINABLY PRESERVING PASTORALISM: LESSONS FROM KENYA COMMERCIAL FARM
In the first of week of March 2017 i had a privilege of visiting a commercial ranch in Naivasha. It was impressive that with the current ongoing dry spell the cattle were in good body condition albeit with bare ground. The Farm has close to 7,000herd of cattle and also small stock (not confirmed). The Farm has invested in herd management making it drought ready. The Farm is providing employment opportunities thus supporting our Kenya Vision 2030
It got my brainwave on a spin. If we have a Pastoralist with 300-400 cattle that translates to approximately 20 Pastoralist!! Making an assumption of land ownership of 500ha/person=10,000ha. Now suppose they came together and formed a Cooperative, put in place workable Herd Management System.
In the course they would be able to put in place diseases control measures, 2,000ha of fodder for the dry season, slaughter unit (value addition is way to go), ecotourism, reduced human-wildlife conflict; the possibilities are immense and worth exploring. The idea of being bogged down during dry spell will become more manageable.
We can learn and adopt form within our borders for those Kenyans who have invested. It is possible and idea worth exploring, for failure is in not trying
